Trusteeship in Troubling Times: Board Roles when the Community is in Uproar

A seminar for trustees sponsored by the North Carolina Association of Independent Schools (NCAIS).

Schools are increasingly becoming embroiled in conflict among stakeholders deriving from larger political and social trends. How should the board add value in such moments when members of the school community are agitated or express irritation and discontentment? At the very least, how can the board avoid adding fuel to the fire while it adheres to good governance practices? Judy Schechtman and Marc Frankel will use “ripped from the headlines” case material to understand communities in crisis and to navigate the boundaries between administrative and governance areas of responsibility. Join this session to gain insight through lessons learned from schools in crisis, and to scenario plan how your board, collectively and as individual trustees, can prepare for such high-stakes moments.
